If you’ve been wanting to make some small improvements around the house, we’ve gathered a couple of great ideas for inspiration. Each project can easily be accomplished within a day or two, and the materials you’ll need are easy to find and inexpensive. Here are our favourite DIY decor projects you can tackle in a weekend.

Transform An Accent Table Or Dresser

If you have an older piece of furniture that is perfectly functional but in need of a refresh, why not give it a quick update? You can easily transform an accent table, dresser, or any other piece of wood furniture with a new coat of paint. Pick a colour that will complement or contrast with your decor and if you’re new to painting furniture, find an online tutorial to guide you. For the finishing touch, change the old hardware; using new hardware fixtures will make the piece look current.

Brighten A Bookcase

We don’t often think of our bookcases as candidates for a makeover, but we should. You can brighten any bookcase by painting the back wall; some even like to apply wallpaper in a print they love. The added pop of colour adds some style and really showcases any items you might choose to display. Of course it makes a great backdrop for books too!

Add Trim To Curtains Or Throw Pillows

If you know how to sew, or are willing to learn, this is an easy DIY that takes items you currently own to the next level. You can purchase inexpensive trims at fabric supply stores in virtually any colour, shape, or texture. Pom pom fringes, tassels, and ribbon trim have been in fashion for a while now and add a sense of playfulness and whimsy to your decor. You can choose bright, multicolour trim or keep it monochrome and tone-on-tone, which looks quite elegant. Embellish curtains, throw pillows—they can even be glued onto lampshades! This is an especially great project for a bedroom, though it works in main living areas as well.

Build Your Own Side Tables

Making your own accent or side tables couldn’t be easier. These live-edge tables would cost a lot to buy but you can make them yourself for a fraction of the price. All you really need is a piece of wood and a set of four hairpin legs. The wood can be any shape you wish; think about where in your space you’d most like to have a table and how much surface area you’ll need. This affordable combination also works well for coffee tables, console tables, and benches.

Put Up Some Peel-and-stick Removable Wallpaper

If you want an update with real impact, why not create an accent wall? It could be the wall behind your bed, in a children’s room, or even in your living room—anywhere you want to add visual interest. If you are artistically inclined, you can sketch out and paint an original design, or you can look into some of the super modern peel-and-stick removable wallpapers out there. They are easy to hang and just as simple to remove, so the commitment is only as long as you want it to be.
