Families who live in the Buttonville area of Markham are fortunate to have a number of great schools nearby to choose from. Here we feature local schools in public, Catholic, and private education, exploring what each has to offer your child.
Coledale Public School
Coledale Public School welcomes kids from junior kindergarten through to grade eight. The school recently celebrated its 30th anniversary and the Mayor of Markham, Frank Scarpitti, attended! In addition to their focus on academics, the school hosts a number of fun community events throughout the year, including a musical at Christmas, a Book Tasting, and their annual Spring Fling. They’ve also partnered with the non-profit organization 360°kids, which assists at-risk and homeless youth. For those in need of child care, a YMCA Child Care Centre operates on site.
Buttonville Public School
Buttonville Public School on John Button Boulevard also welcomes students from junior kindergarten through grade eight. This busy, active school community holds workshops for parents and children; offers a balanced program that encourages academics, athletics, and the arts; and hosts a number of fun events throughout the year, including a Family Wellness Evening, a dance-a-thon, and a primary play date. Go Bulldogs!
St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School
Children in kindergarten through grade eight will find much to love at St. Justin Martyr Catholic Elementary School, where staff and students alike are dedicated to faith, excellence, and service. Students give and serve generously here, and the calendar is filled with opportunities to support the broader community. They are dedicated to achievement in academics and in sports (Go Wolves go!). The Stop Bullying walk-a-thon, a fall fundraiser, and a trip to Camp Muskoka are all events to look forward to. Building character is a strong focus here, with Virtue Awards given out monthly.
Trinity Montessori School
Trinity Montessori School is a private, independent school that was established in 1999. It is a smaller school with teachings based on Maria Montessori’s curriculum and it offers a low student-teacher ratio. Toddlers can start at 18 months and at two and a half years old your child can begin the Casa program. Physical education classes for students five and older are held at the nearby Angus Glen Community Centre. The school offers flexible hours and is open from 7 am to 6 pm. Before and after school care is available for those who need child minding beyond the school’s core hours of 8:30 am to 4:00 pm. They even offer a hot lunch program!
Unionville High School
Unionville High School is uniquely situated right next to the Flato Markham Theatre and the Markham Civic Centre. It is home to the Arts Unionville program, which is a package of eight specialized arts courses. Artistically talented students who are interested in dance, drama, visual arts, or music (winds, vocal, strings, piano, brass, and percussion) are encouraged to apply. The application process starts in grade eight and students enter the program in grade nine. It is great for those who are considering a career in the arts, as well as students who simply enjoy artistic practice and wish to develop their skills. As you can imagine, a number of exciting shows are put on throughout the year!
